Eleven (Buena Vista)
I grew up in New York City, in an apartment on the ground floor. It was lovely, but it didn’t have a view. I’d look out my bedroom window, just above street level, and all I could see were cars, people walking, and the building across the street. So when I got my first apartment, it was on the 15th floor, with a great city view.
When I moved to Los Angeles the first time, I lived in a community with 12-story buildings and I took an apartment on the 11th floor. The living room faced downtown LA, and on most days, I could see it in the distance. I took a lot of pictures through my windows during the seven years I lived there.
When I moved back east, I really missed the LA light. And that view.
I finally moved back to LA, to a different building in the same complex, also on the 11th floor. The views are different and I photograph them constantly. The light is always changing. I also go to a small outdoor alcove in the hallway near the stairs, where I get to photograph a view I don’t have from any of my windows.
I add the circle to focus on the details I want the viewer to see. The layer at the bottom is blurred from a copy of the original photograph, because there is always more to see, even if we’re not looking clearly at it. >>>Back
