I was in the midst of planning a trip to Seattle for the opening of Distinction at the Photographic Center NW, when the virus became the news, and everyone’s plans were tossed away. After a few weeks of lying around watching screens, I realized that I had found a good way to travel outside the apartment where I was self-isolating. So I picked up a Lensbaby and started to #travelbytelevision. And I always photograph when I’m traveling.

Although I haven’t been to half of these places in the real world, now I’m intrigued by many of them. And while I haven’t visited Planet M-113, I have been on the deck of the starship Enterprise.

Appropriating images from a TV screen isn’t new to me - it’s been part of my practice for a long time. I first made a series of manipulated Polaroids of musicians from MTV videos, Beyond Recognition. Even one of my current surveillance projects, WhatYouSee, pulls out images with CCTV cameras from different genres of television shows. I expect that my use of the media and television as source material for my photographs will continue to evolve. In the meantime, I’m thinking about future travels.
